Imogen Allen (b. 1997) is a British painter from Cornwall, England. She received her BA in Fine Art Painting from Camberwell College of Arts, London (2020). Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Megan Mulrooney Gallery (Los Angeles), Nino Mier Gallery (New York), Harpers Books (East Hampton), Monti8 (Rome), Soho Revue (London) and Blue Door Gallery (Brooklyn), amongst others.
Allen’s practice explores ecology, perception and the shifting relationship between self and world. Her paintings draw on close encounters with the natural world, transforming subjects such as butterfly wings, fungi and natural phenomena into expansive fields of colour, light and sensation. Through magnification, the familiar becomes strange: a tiny fragment of a wing can suggest a vast landscape, while architectures of colour become spaces through which the senses swim. The softness of Allen’s paint blurs the boundaries between these spaces, creating a dream-like reality inseparable from the mind interpreting it.
An enduring intimacy with the more-than-human world informs Allen’s work. She is interested in how consciousness shapes our experience of nature and in dissolving the boundaries between observer and observed. Her paintings explore a world in which humans are not separate from nature, but part of the living world itself.
